Description:
Hungarian-born Stefan Csordas and his wife Maria Theresia (b.1918) arrived in Australia as displaced persons in 1951. Stefan was employed as a medical officer by the Australian Antarctic Division, on three expeditions to Macquarie Island - 1955, 1957 and 1959 - during which time he carried out research into the island's flora and fauna, in particular a census of the fur seal population. He later worked for the Victorian Department of Health, specialising in tuberculosis.;;Records created by Dr Csordas in his official capacity as an officer of the Australian Antarctic Division are held in the National Archives of Australia (series P1556). Antarctic doctor Ingrid McGaughey had corresponded with Dr Csordas while she was stationed at Macquarie Island. She acquired Dr Csordas's personal records from his second wife Peggy, and subsequently donated them to the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office through the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program.;;
