Alfred George David [Alf] Walters was born on 17 April 1904 at Flowerdale, Tasmania, the youngest of 11 children. He was an experienced bushman, who was involved in the construction of many of the Great Western Tiers Mountain huts. The Alf Walters Lodge, opened in 1972, was named after him.;;Alf enlisted for service in World War 2 and was a private in the 3rd Australian Ordinance Stores Company from September 1941 to April 1946 where he exercised his skills as a bootmaker. He spent time as a prisoner of war under the Japanese army on the Thai-Burma railway and at Changi prison camp.;;
