In June 1977 a meeting was held to discuss the need for supported accommodation for women with drug and alcohol problems. ;;Caroline House in Carr Street, New Town was then opened on 16 October 1978. Funding for this service was provided by Bernhard Bergh and through State and Federal funding. ;;Another house was soon needed to meet the demand for crisis accommodation, and a house in Mt Stuart Road was rented for this purpose. For a period of 6 or 7 years Caroline House Inc. ran these two houses, until 1991, when the property in Mt Stuart Road was closed. ;;With the purchase of another house in Carr Street, New Town, Caroline House Inc. operated two houses side by side, one being used for women with drug and alcohol problems and the second one used for the accommodation of the women's children. Caroline House Inc. also rented another house in Archer Street which housed women with mental health issues who did not require 24 hour-a-day supervision.;;By 2001 Caroline House Inc. had accommodated 2000 women and hundreds of children.;;Caroline House, as Caroline House Incorporated, is no longer and entity and the activities undertaken have passed to Hobart City Mission.;;Client files and minutes of board meetings have been deposited with the Tasmanian Archives but have yet to be processed.
