Description:
George Whitcomb (ca.1803-1881) arrived in Van Diemens Land in the 1820s. He worked as a Customs clerk and a warehouse keeper before becoming Manager of the smelting works established by Askin Morrison and Charles Swanston at a property in Rosny acquired by the Derwent Bank in 1849. Whitcomb's later business interests included the Mersey and Deloraine Tramway, the Fingal Quartz Crushing Co and the Hobart Gas Co.
