John Foster (1792-1875), his younger brother Henry and their mother Jane arrived in VDL per the Berwick in 1823. John and Henry were the sons of the late John Foster of Armistead near Settle, County York. Initially the family settled at 'Fosterville', 500acres of granted land near Campbell Town. Here they exported grain to Mauritius and imported British goods. ;;In 1832 John Foster bought 12 acres of the Cottage Green Estate, on which he built the family home 'Wiverhoe' on Hampden Road, Hobart. In 1841 John Foster began to lease and later purchase a large property at Cape Portland. John was a shareholder in many companies including the Douglas River Coal Company. A shipowner and importer of cattle, John also owned a range of properties in Victoria.;;He married Anne Riddiford in 1863, and together they had three sons (Henry, b.1862; John Dowbiggin, b.1867; Askin Morrison b.1868), and two daughters (Jane Foster, b.1863; Frances Harriett, b.1866; );;In 1848 John Foster was appointed as Police Magistrate in the Sorell and Prosser districts. He was also a foundation member of the Tasmanian Club. In 1868 Foster succeeded J H Wedge to represent the Huon District in the Legislative Council; a position he retained until retirement in 1874. When he passed away in 1875 he was residing at 94 Davey Street, Hobart.;;Henry Foster (Snr) managed the Cape Portland Property in the 1840s to 50s. Henry had one daughter Henrietta.;;Henry Foster (Jnr) was sent to England to be educated. On his return he settled at Merton Vale, establishing a pure Merino Stud.
