Jack Ward was one of the 14 members of Phillip Law's 1950 ANARE [Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition] to Macquarie Island. He also joined Law on a second 1955 expedition. His time in Antarctica was recognised through being awarded the Polar Medal and having a peak in Mac. Robertson Land named Mount Ward.;;Ward was born in Williamstown, Victoria in 1920. He completed diplomas in industrial chemistry and metallurgy at RMIT. A pacifist, Ward spent the war years working at a Spotswood glass manufacturing laboratory and as a food analyst at the Angliss meat-packing factory. After the war he furthered his education with a ship radio operation qualification from the Marconi School of Wireless and Electronics. A lover of travel, languages, and learning, Ward spent the 1950s travelling in Europe, the UK, the US, and Antarctica. A prolific reader and writer, Ward completed a librarianship qualification, becoming RMIT librarian from 1956 to 1981, and a director of the Co-operative Bookshop. Ward, a lifelong bachelor, passed away in September 2013.
