J G ('Jack' or 'Dood') Breheny was born in Toowoomba Qld in 1910. The eldest of 5 children, the Breheny's moved to Perth, Tas when Jack was 7 years old. From age 16 to 39 Jack worked for the Bank of Australasia. In 1938 Jack joined the Citizen Military Force (CMF), enlisting in 1940 in the 2/3 machine gun battalion. Jack served in the Middle and Far East, including 3 years and 8 months as a POW of the Japanese. Jack spent 1949 working on the anti-bank nationalisation committee. This public platform and his involvement in community affairs lead to his election to the Tasmanian House of Assembly in 1951 as Liberal member of Darwin (later Braddon). Jack spent 18 years in opposition. He was then Party Whip in the Bethune Liberal Government 1969-72 when he lost his seat. Breheny was known as an outspoken politician, with a passion for political and community activity. He is also known for controversial statements on issues. Jacks later years were spent as an Ulverstone councillor, 1976-1991, and in community service. He was awarded a Centenary Medal for community service in 2003. Jack was President of the Ulverstone Rifle Club for 18 years, a Patron of the Ulverstone Surf Life Saving Club (of which he was a founding member in 1929). Jack was a keen bushwalker and swimmer up until his early 90s. Jack passed away in Ulverstone aged 98.
