Description:
The Lake Pedder Restoration Committee (LPRC) and also known, for a time as Pedder 2000, is an organization that was set up in October 1993 to campaign for the restoration of the original Lake Pedder, which had been flooded in 1972-1973 as part of a hydro-electricity scheme. It grew out of the Victorian-based Lake Pedder Study Group, formed in July 1992, which also included Tasmanian members. The Study Group was the research arm of the campaign for the lake's restoration. It commissioned various studies and gathered information to provide a platform for the campaign. Members of the foundation Study Group were Victorians Bob Desailly, Lee Southwell and Peter Stapleton and Tasmanian representatives Bob Brown, Helen Gee and Alec Marr.;;The foundation members of the LPRC were Hilary Edwards, Bob Brown, Helen Gee, Kevin Kiernan, Bob Walker, Alec Marr, Melva Truchanas and Chris Cowles. They formally launched their campaign "Pedder 2000" in April 1994, supported by prominent botanist David Bellamy and also the David Suzuki Foundation. They worked tirelessly to galvanise local and international support for restoration by demonstrating the feasibility from the geological, biological, engineering and economic points of view. Among Pedder 2000's activities were - audio-visual presentations, a scientific symposium, a deputation to the federal government, letter-writing and media releases, grant submissions, and petitions. ;;In 1995 the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment, Recreation and the Arts conducted an "Inquiry into the Proposal to Drain and Restore Lake Pedder". It reported back that "restoration feasible but neither necessary or urgent".;;There were branches of the LPRC in Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT.;;;;Other sources of records relating to Lake Pedder - Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and the National Archives of Australia.
