Edward Yates (1777-1829), a miller, and Jane Hamphlett/Dillon (1783-1833) married at Dawley Magna, Shropshire, and had nine children there - James (b.1801), John (b.1802), James (b.1804), Edward (1806-1827), Jane (1808-1810), Elizah (1809-1881), Samuel (1811-1891), Eleanor (b.1813), and Adam (b.1815). Edward Yates was sent in 1817 as a convict per the Sir William Bensley (to NSW), and the Elizabeth Henrietta (to Hobart). In 1819 Edward Yates was superintendent of the Government mill, and in 1820 was responsible for building a mill in Liverpool Street, Hobart. He applied for his family to join him in VDL, and in 1820 Jane and five of their children arrived in Hobart. Their youngest child, Matilda, was born in Launceston in 1823 (d.1844). The family moved north, where the Yates built a water mill (known as the Yates Mill or North Esk Mill). Edward Yates died at Patterson Plains in 1829. Jane died in 1833 after remarrying a George Williat in 1831.
