Description:
Francis Spence (1786-1880) and Mary (nee Clayton; 1802-1857), arrived in Van Diemens Land from Yorkshire in 1828 per the Caroline. Spence, indentured to work for the Van Diemens Land Company, spent his first three years in the colony at Circular Head. In 1831 Spence purchased land at Launceston known as 'Muddy Plains'. Francis and Mary had six children - Thomas (1830-1868), Mary Ann (1831-1906), Eliza (b.1828), Francis (1839-1917), Sarah (1840-1921) and Elizabeth (1842-1925). Mary Ann, daughter of Francis and Mary Spence, married William White (1820-1906) in 1852.
