Andrew Dougald Watson (1885-1962) was appointed to the Aurora, Australian Antarctic Expedition as the geologist and photographer on the Western Base Party, Queen Mary Land. He spent almost a year in 1912-13 in the group of eight led by Frank Wild. During this time he trained the party's dogs, dug a shaft to study glacial ice, and studied the effects of glaciers on the landscape. A promontory on David Island is named 'Watson Bluff' in his honour.;;Born in New South Wales, Watson was a school teacher before gaining a scholarship to study geology, chemistry and biology at the University of Sydney. At university Watson was a ken athlete, representing the University in baseball, cricket and golf. On returning from Antarctica Watson married Enid Godfrey and embarked on a long teaching career. He was headmaster at Glen Innes, Bowrel, Canberra, and Homebush Boys' high schools.
