The Hobart Brick Company (HBC) was formed following a meeting held at the Imperial on Saturday, 19 August 1905. The meeting had been called to initiate a proposed Builders and Merchants Co-operative Brick Company. The provisional directors appointed that evening were Robert Stabb (chairman), William Cooper, Arthur Dowding, James Mackenzie and James Dunn. Duff's brickworks at Forster Street in New Town was suggested as the first site and taken on as a going concern.;;In 1908 Kemp & Denning bought an interest in HBC, and gained control in 1936.;;In 1961 two subsidiary companies of HBC were formed - Down Draught Bricks Pty Ltd and Hoffman Bricks Pty Ltd.;;
