Description:
An innovate residential dementia facility at Warrane, Tasmania, Adards nursing home was conceived and developed by Dr John Tooth (1932-2018) and Dr Sam Ginsberg. Their aim was to provide a facility catering for high needs patients. The facility saw four nine-bedroomed houses joined in a calming 'domestic environment'. The unique domestic set up included a garden with chickens and a bus stop, a kitchen in each house, a car that could be washed, a hairdresser, and a free movement approach. Allan Bester was the Director of Nursing at Adards to 2006. Adards was internationally recognised as a leader in psychogeriatric / dementia care. The term ADARDS (Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Society) is broadly used internationally. Funding issues led to the facility being sold in 2008 to Presbyterian Homes Hobart. This saw the facility move to a broader provision of aged care, with dementia care as a component. The new management of the home used the term 'Adards' as a treatment approach 'the Adards treatment model'. As at 2019 Presbyterian Homes Hobart were operating the facility under the name of 'Regis Eastern Shore'. In 2019 Regis Eastern Shore provided 48 rooms with standard aged care services, as well as 37 beds in the specialist 'Adards' dementia care wing.
