Born as Mary Ann Briscoe in Hobart Town on November 16, 1807. In 1846 Mary Ann married for the second time to Thomas Carroll, a Van Diemen's Land indentured servant and they had four children. She married four times over her lifetime, and had fourteen children. Mary Ann Carroll held a certificate of proficiency in midwifery, one of twelve selected and trained by the Government for the profession. She died in 1896, just before her 89th birthday, and was reported at the time to be "one of the oldest Tasmanians".
