Established in 1824, Cascade Brewery Co. is now Australia's oldest operating brewery. Founded by English settlers Peter Degraves and Major McIntosh, plans were devised for the brewery during Degraves' time in the Old Hobart Gaol while serving time for an offence he committed in England. Upon his release in 1831, Degraves set about realising his vision and in December 1832 the first Cascade Brewery Co. beer was sold. Recent research indicates that Major McIntosh was the major party in the business collaboration, and that Degraves had falsified the history of the brewery after Macintosh's death in 1834. In 1967 the Tasmanian bushfires destroyed part of the brewery, but with the help of people of Hobart, the brewery was restored and back to operation within months. The Brewery operates from the same location today, also producing a range of non-alcoholic products.
