Description:
Leslie David Hardman (1909-1995) was born to Ernest David Hardman and Caroline Murfet on 2 December 1909 at "Green Rises", Cressy, Tasmania. After leaving school, Leslie worked at various jobs - as a hawker, house painter and tram, and later, bus driver in Launceston. In the 1950s, along with some others, he formed the business Radio Taxis. Jessie Kathleen Williams (1909 -2011) was born to William J L Williams and Mary Louisa Forsyth in Launceston on 1 April 1909, and was one of ten children. Williams was a blacksmith and lifetime member of the Launceston Horticultural Society. Leslie and Jessie married in May 1938. Jessie and Leslie would take their family on weekend and holiday outings around Tasmania where Leslie, an avid amateur photographer, would photograph and film, with an 8mm movie camera, the places they visited. Jessie would take notes and provide commentary for the films. In 1958 Leslie, Jessie and their two children, Raymond and Kathleen, left Tasmania for Queensland. In Queensland the Hardman family initially ran a delicatessen before purchasing a service station which they operated until Leslie's retirement. Jessie and Les would travel back to Tasmania on many occasions from the 1960s to the 1990s. While the slides in their collection are mostly from the pre 1958 period, the film footage is a mix of pre 1958 and 1960-1990s footage. The films were branded by Les and Jessie as 'Hardmans Travel Talk', and also include an amateur film production created for the Strathgordon Hotel-Motel Syndicate. Leslie died on 22 June 1995. Jessie died on 20 January 2011. The Hardman's are decedents of Richard Hardman who arrived per Maria and Elizabeth Henrietta in 1818. The Williams were descendants of Nathaniel Lucas and Louisa Gascoyne.
