Description:
The Derwent Cricket Club was established in 1835 and is the oldest surviving cricket club in Australia. The club was initially founded as the 'Hobart Town Cricket Club' on 27 October 1832, and changed its name to the 'Derwent Cricket Club' on 12 February 1835. Early members included the Honourable J.H. Elliott, nephew of Governor Franklin. In the early years the club played on the grounds of Government House, fencing and turfing the cricket ground at their own expense. In 1840, they were compelled to abandon the ground so that the Government could use the area for the drilling of troops of the 53rd Regiment. ;;Thomas Sheehy, Honourable Secretary of the Southern Tasmanian Cricket Association noted that the records in the collection of the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Art were used in the publication of 'Retrospect of Cricket / Southern Tasmanian Cricket Association', published in 1870. These records came in to the possession of Henry Allport through his grandfather Francis Beresford Campbell who was a member of the Club. ;;
