Mathew Friend was born 21/1/1792 at Ramsgate England. He entered the English Navy in 1806 and became a lieutenant with a scientific bent. After leaving the navy Friend immigrated with his family including three brothers to Tasmania in 1830. In 1832 he was appointed Port Officer of Launceston. He returned to England in 1852 due to ill health and oncoming blindness forced him to resign. He died in Somerset, on 21 October 1871.
