The Shakespeare Society of Tasmania was formed following a large gathering at the Theatre Royal presided over by Sir Herbert Nicholls in February 1926. Foundation Society committee members included Dorothy Brigden, Isabella Perry Turnbull, Miss V. Harris, Samuel Clemes, Thomas and Sidney Brammall, Mr Thorold, Mr Johnson, Mr Elliston, Ernest W. Cruikshank, Frederick Bowden and Professor Taylor.;;The organisation engaged in reading, analysis and study of Shakespeare's plays.;;It was particularly inspired by actor-manager Allan Wilkie who specialled in Shakespearean productions in Australia c. 1916 - 1930s.;;There had previously been at least two Shakespeare Societies in Hobart - in the 1860s and 1890s;;
