The Society was established to encourage the growth of plants and has had close ties with the Royal Society and Botanical Gardens.
It has had a long tradition of exhibiting horticultural products though various shows. The Hobart Town Courier of 8 November 1839 reported that the Society's first show would take place at Pavilion Point on 3 December 1839 in conjunction with the Regatta. All persons were invited to exhibit flowers, fruits and vegetables but it was said that prizes would only be awarded to subscribers.
