Maurice, a farmer at Smithton, was born in Hobart in 1884 to Maurice Giles Sampson (Carpenter) and Eliza Kalbfell. His family was based in Launceston, and it is there that his other eight siblings were born - Grace (b.1881), John (b.1882), Amelia Eliza (b.1895), Giles Godwin (b.1886), Daisy Lisette (b.1888), Edith Morea (b.1891), Gretchen Bertha (b.1893), and Lucy (b.1898).;;Sampson was very active in the local North-Western Tasmanian community. He was a councillor in the Emmett Ward, Smithton, and Chairman of the Smithton Harbour Trust. In the 1940s he was the Grand Master of Tasmania of the IOOF.;;Sampson resided on Robbins Island for seven years. He married Eleanor Mary Reid (1873-1954). Eleanor and Maurice had a foster son, Owen Leslie Ollington.
