How to Use:
Each photographic "job" was given a unique negative number and stored in a packet. There may be multiple negatives associated with one "job". The negatives are stored in groups within protective bags HOWEVER care must be taken when retrieving as the numbers are recorded on small pieces of card which slip out of order very easily. Only Libraries Tasmania staff are permitted to retrieve the negatives for client requests.

Negatives of the majority of "Beattie views" are still in the custody of the Stephenson family.
Series notes:
Negatives from the Beattie Studio taken by the Stephenson family as owners of the business since the 1930s. A large proportion of the series comprises negatives of family portraits of various kinds (groups, weddings, babies and children). Also included are passport shots, negatives of sporting teams, school groups, recreational organisations and some businesses.

Some negatives for images other than family portraits have had contact prints made by the Archives Office (NS6751 - their description is preceded by the Beattie negative number). These are currently being listed (March 2023).

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
System of Arrangement:
By negative number. Early negatives were made of glass (to c. 1930s). Later negatives were made from cellulose acetate and from c. 1970s a polyester base was used.;;The first boxes of negatives were initially thought to be from separate number sequences but they are not. For this reason there is some rearrangement that needs to take place - this will be an ongoing project - for early negative numbers up to c. 1400, it may be necessary to check within more than one of the boxes numbered NS1592/1/1-8 (March 2023).;;Some negatives are suffering from vinegar syndrome. This group (items/boxes 74, 134, 137 and 157-203 and 350) have been quarantined from the remainder of the negatives ready for conservation and digitisation. This will be an ongoing project (March 2023).;;Note also that not all negatives have survived and there may be gaps in the early part of the collection.;;
