Consignment 2 comprises Tasmanian Fire Tarrifs and Accident Tariffs. They contain progressively updated tariff details up to the 1970s. They are a valuable social record of insurance organisation in Tasmania in that period. The 'Tariff' was the shorthand name for the state based Fire, Accident and Marine Underwriting Associations that ran insurance in Australia between 1880 and 1974. In that latter year the coming of the Trade Practices Act made such behaviour illegal. They met monthly to set prices, contract terms and geographical areas where companies could trade. These rules were compiled in Tariff rate books that were held by all member companies (source - AAMI Archive, Melbourne).

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
