Series notes:
A 111 page manuscript with original ink text and lead pencil and red ink annotations. A title on the second page states the work as 'Reminiscences of Port Arthur and Tasman's Peninsula, by Riegel'. The text is written from the point of view of a man claiming to have been invited to Port Arthur by a friend who had taken on the role of chaplain after the departure of the Chaplain the Rev Rowland Hayward. This friend is likely to be Rev William Mitchell, who succeeded Hayward in 1873. On the first page there is the name 'C Gruncell, 1889' in ink, as well as a note in blue pen claiming that the manuscript was written by 'George Gruncell, photographer'. Charles Gruncell (1852-1930), was the photographer of the Gruncell family, so it is likely that the note is confused. However it is most probable that the text was written by Rev George Gruncell (1850-1879), brother of Charles, and later annotated by Charles in preparation for publication. A set of newspaper clippings from 1930 are inserted in the back of the volume.
