Series notes:
This series of glass and cellulose acetate negatives was known as the 'Sharland' collection.
In 1976 Michael Sharland published a book titled 'Once upon a time: some Tasmanian tales' which featured many images from the Mercury's negative collection. Following this, the Mercury received a large number of requests from members of the public for reproductions of the images highlighted in the publication. Consequently, it extracted the 'Sharland' negatives from the main sequence of negatives and kept them separately to facilitate access.
These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
System of Arrangement:
Negatives were housed in numbered boxes identified as Sharland No 1, Sharland No 2 and so on .;;There are often references to the negatives' original box number e.g. NS4023/1/133 is from original box 86 but re-housed as Sharland Box 9 by the Mercury . This original boxed negative series is now related series NS4261.
