Series notes:
Series includes both glass plate and cellulose acetate negatives. Many of the negatives are in boxes grouped by subject and others are without formal descriptions. The boxes may have been removed from the main sequence of negatives but have been kept as a discrete set. This sequence includes what the Mercury called "re-copies". Recopies were part of a technical process for getting hard copy art work/pictures and the like into a negative format required for printing in the newspaper.

This means that some of the recopy negatives can originally have been made from sources outside the Mercury e.g. pictures used for advertising, real estate photos.

Dates of many of the images are certain e.g. NS4325/1/5582 has the date August 1 1936 within the image and is repeated on the original envelope which sleeved the negative. Many negatives are, however, undated. The early start date of the series can be somewhat misleading - there are only two negatives dated 1901 and the majority were taken much later.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
