Barry had a strong interest and commitment to education. He was very active in the area of architectural and planning education.Barry was a central figure in the Hobart Architectural Co-operative which was founded in late 1980 and which sought to change and expand the learning environment for students, teachers and practitioners in the architectural, planning and landscape fields.

He was a proponent of a new way of delivering education through a liberal arts college and was also involved in a group planning alternative schooling.
