Series notes:
A handwritten diary (185mmx115mm) written by James Cubbiston Sutherland. Most of the entries concern farming operations, social visits, magisterial duties, etc. There are references to well known families in the Midlands, mention of the conduct and treatment of servants, details of the value of produce, and accounts of bushrangers and Aboriginal people. The two volume diary was presented to the State Archives by Sir Lewis Ritchie, of Surrey, England. Two transcripts have been created and added to this series. The first is a summary of 'the more important entries' by W H Hudspeth in 1950, and the second is a full transcript (with notes) created by Colin and Joan McKenzie in 2019. The Hudspeth transcript is also available in series LMSS509.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
