Series notes:
This series consists of files of the Civil Engineering Branch of the Australian National Railways/ Tasrail in Tasmania. The arrangement and control of the series remained substantially the same from the time of the Chief Civil Engineer's Office in the period 1969-1981.
Topics covered in this series relate to the construction and maintenance of the permanent way in Tasmania. Examples include buildings, bridges, contractors, collisions, derailments, enquiries, floods, gangs and cars, housing, leases, protective clothing, quotations and tenders, unions, rails and fastenings, rehabilitation of permanent way, speed restrictions, staff, track, turntables, tunnels, weighbridges, weekly notices and welding.
A large portion of the correspondence files from the Civil Engineer's Branch of the Chief Engineer's Office are contained within this series. Some files have continued to be used by the Civil Engineer's Branch with a tertiary number added to the original two number filing system or as unaltered parts to subsequent multiple numbered files. They have been retained in this series to enable the administrative and operational functions of the Civil Engineering Branch to be documented correctly. With the relocation of the Civil Engineering Branch to the Hobbler's Bridge complex in Newsted, the branch commenced using the annual single number correspondence filing system in January 1991.
These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
System of Arrangement:
Multiple number. Part files are identified as 'backs' at top right corner of file cover, eg '1st back' refers to part 1. - 1/1/1(?) - 750/1/1(?)
