Series notes:
This series consists of civil engineering construction drawings of the permanent way and stations and yards of the Tasmanian Government Railways, later AN Tasrail. The drawings are largely drawn by TGR/AN Tasrail civil engineering staff with the exceptions of drawings done by civil engineering contractors, earlier drawings done by the Public Works Department (Tasmania) and top numbered into this series and drawings of private and interstate rail operators. There are occasional drawings of the Tasmanian Main Line Railway Company (a private company and the predecessor of the private company which shares some facilities at Burnie with Tasmanian Government Railways) and the Emu Bay Railway Company (also AN).

The drawings consist mainly of additions, deviations and upgradings to railway lines and buildings undertaken since World War II. A notable exception is the construction of the Bell Bay Line for which full construction drawings were supplied to TGR by consulting engineers Maunsells. Most of the drawings are indexed by location along a railway line. There are, however, general sections entitled bridges, surveys, charts and maps, rails and fastenings, clearance diagrams and equipment, signals, crossings, licenses and leases and standards.

These drawings were stored vertically in racking within the plan vault at Invermay. The hanging system consisted of five evenly spaced rods running longitudinally within timber cabinets. Each drawing had two tags attached to it which had a split hole that could be forced over the rods to hold the plans. A high proportion of the drawings were also edge taped with cloth or plastic tape. Both the hanging tags and the edge taping have caused considerable damage to the plans. There was also a fine film of dust present on the surface of most of the drawings.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
