Series notes:
This series consists of the register of files for the general correspondence series P1200 which was the main correspondence series used by the Tasmanian Government Railways until the early 1960's. The register is in two forms. A volume covers the period 1921 to 1945. From 1945 the register is in card form. As P1200 is an annual single number series the files register is in chronological order. The extant volume is in a large leather bound volume in poor condition. The pages of the volume are numbered and printed with columns as follows; (from left to right) number (of file), date, writer, subject, to whom referred and references, when returned and how disposed of. In the main, only the number and subject column are used and the register is not apparently a orrespondence register as it first appears. From a period midway through 1924 each file is assigned a letter (usually of the keyword in the file title) next to the file number. Later on in the register this is referred to as a box and is either a single letter as above or a subject such as Hobart Box, electrical Box, Iron and Steel etc. This system may refer to a subject index. There is a note at the last entry for 1945 that the volume is closed and future entries are in a card index. Cards are extant till 1956.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
