"CPM" the medium though which the Police and Assistant Police Magistrate...corresponded with the Government or with the Head of any Department ...and through which the Lt Governors' decision upon their Magisterial sentences have been communicated" (C.P.M - CSO 2 Oct 1846 - CSO 20/36/913) A threat to these powers of the C.P.M. by the Comtroller General of Convicts or the arrival of Denison may have been the impetus for this series which began in 1847. The exact correspondence begins in 1851 at file no. and finishes in 1856 at file no 6000. The office of C.P.M. ceased to exist in June 1857 when most powers were transferred to the Inspectors of Police and some municipalities and residual duties devolved on Col.
