The administration of justice in minor civil and criminal matters in the district of George Town. The local magistrate/justices also presided over hearings in the Licensing Court and was the Commissioner for Goldfields.;;By 1989 with the establishment of the Magistrates Court of Tasmania, there were only four local courts remaining, Burnie, Devonport, Launceston & Hobart. Some rural areas were serviced by the Local Court on Circuit from one of these four courts.;;Administrative reponsibility for George Town Lower Court is held by Launceston Lower Court
