Description:
Technical education as a State enterprise dates back to 1887, when the government began to fund the new Hobart Technical College. A reorganisation of technical education in 1916 was followed by the opening of the Hobart Junior Technical School in 1920. This school, which prepared boys for work in trades and industry became the Hobart Technical High School in 1950 and New Town High School (boys only) in 1962 (School no. 743).
