Description:
The first school in Oatlands was established in 1833 only 12 years after the town was named. The first school teacher, Mr Fyfe, was paid an allowance of 25 pounds per year to run the school from his own home. His wife was paid an equal sum to teach needlework to the girls. In 1886 new school premises were built in Stutzer St at a cost of 1417 pounds. The building was an impressive structure of sandstone and comprised two wings, one the school proper and the other a two story residence for the School Master. This building now houses the Community College.;;;;In 1946 another site was purchased for the building of a new school and the first stage was completed in 1955. Initially only secondary classes were located at the new site, with Infant and Primary classes continuing at the previous location. In 1972 the Tunbridge Primary School closed for the last time, leaving Oatlands Area School, or the Oatlands District School as it became in 1973, the only remaining school in the Oatlands Municipality. The last classes at the Old School ceased in 1976 when the Infant section was relocated to the new premises on the High School site.
