Description:
Provide mental health care in the areas of psychiatric illness, intellectual disability and alcohol and drug abuse. These services were delivered through long term hospital accomodation, day patient facilities and community centres in the major population area of the State. The Mental Health Services Act established the Commission to replace a Division of the Department of Health Services.;;;;Following a major reorganisation of the Tasmanian State Service, Mental Health Services were again amalgamated into the Department of Health and absorbed into its new regional structure on 17 July 1989. Services for the intellectually disabled were, at the same time, transferred to the Department of Community Services.;;;;The Commission was not formally abolished until 1993.
