Established 1977 to provide accurate statistics of cancer incidence and mortality in the Tasmanian population and to monitor cancer trends. In July 1988 the Registry was transferred from the Department of Health Services as part of the establishment of the Menzies Centre for Population Health Research (now the Menzies Research Institute) within the University of Tasmania. As of 7 January 1993 cancer became a notifiable disease in Tasmania.
