Description:
The Tasmanian Herd Improvement Organisation (THIO) was established in 1977 under the governance of the Herd Improvement Board of Tasmania. The Board had been established by the Herd Improvement Act 1977 to provide a program of genetic improvement for Tasmanian dairy herds. ;;;;At that time it took over an artificial breeding program operated by the Artificial Breeding Board of Tasmania since 1964, and herd recording services provided previously by the State Department of Agriculture. The Artificial Breeding Board ceased with the repealing of the Artificial Breeding Acts 1964-75 under the new 1977 Act.;;;;THIO received financial assistance from the State Government but was controlled by dairy producers through their majority representation on the Board.;;;;THIO was formerly wound up in 1988 when its Board was dissolved under the Herd Improvement Amendment Act and its role was transferred to the Tasmanian Dairy Industry Authority (TDIA). Within TDIA a Herd Improvement Division & Advisory Board was established at the beginning of 1989.
