The Tasmanian Government, in consultation with the Commonwealth, appointed this Committee to inquire into the state of farm finances of soldier settlers on King Island. The terms of reference were as follows:;;- to calculate direct annual farm operating costs, excluding capital items;;- to calculate total annual farm income;;- to carry out a comprehensive survey of annual personal expenditure;;- to obtain information regarding rates of depreciation of capital items;;- to make suggestions as to the basis of charges which settlers could be expected to meet;;- to investigate any other matters the Committee considered pertinent to the inquiry.;;;;The Committee visited the island on no less than six occasions. Of the 151 settlers under the War Service Land Settlement Scheme on King Island at the time, the inquiry surveyed a sample of thirty. Apart from interviewing settlers, examining settlers' financial records and inspecting farms, the Committee also drew on information from business and industry sources on the island, government officers associated with land settlement on the island and various other investigations, surveys and published materials pertaining to primary producers.;;;;In the light of State and Commonwealth involvement in setting up the Inquiry, the Committee submitted its report to the Chairman of the Closer Settlement Board and to the Director of the War Service Land Settlement Division in the Federal Department of Primary Industry.
