Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd was established on 1 July 2011 as a State-owned company. It was created to merge the responsibilities of the former Rivers and Water Supply Commission and the RWSC's two subsidiaries, Tasmanian Irrigation Development Board Pty Ltd and Tasmanian Irrigation Schemes Pty Ltd. Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd was created by the Irrigation Company Act 2011 which also provided for TIS Pty Ltd to be deregistered and for the RWSC to be abolished.;;;;Tasmanian Irrigation is controlled by a Board of Directors. ;;;;Tasmanian Irrigation progresses schemes from feasibility assessment through to the construction and operational stages.;;;;A recognition that regionally significant irrigation development is, in most cases, beyond the resources of farmers alone, resulted in the establishment of Tasmanian Irrigation (and its predecessors) to realise the schemes through public-private partnerships.;;;;The capital cost of these schemes is shared between the community and the private sector. Private capital contributions are made through the purchase of tradeable water entitlements to a particular scheme by the beneficiaries of that scheme. Operating costs are met by an annual charge on water entitlement holders.;;;;As a result of the merger with the Rivers and Water Supply Commission and Tasmanian Irrigation Schemes Pty Ltd, it also assumed responsibility for the existing Coal River Irrigation Scheme (Sout East Irrigation Scheme: Stage 1) and the Meander Valley Irrigation Scheme. Tasmanian Irrigation also is responsible for the Togari Water Supply Scheme, Welcome River Improvement Scheme, Montagu River Improvement Scheme and the Furneaux Drainage Scheme.
