In 1996, the Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research (TIAR) was created as a joint venture between the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government.;;;;The formation of TIAR brought together the state's two major agricultural research and development providers.;;;;With research facilities in Sandy Bay, New Town, Launceston and Burnie, TIA has around 160 people, consisting of postgraduate students, researchers, development and extension specialists and support staff.;;;;The range of research undertaken at TIA is extensive, being highly industry-focused. TIA supports leading national programs in food safety research through the Australian Food Safety Centre of Excellence.;;;;In December 2011 the organisation changed its name to the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), encorporating the School of Agricultural Science.
