Description:
This government sponsered body was set up in 1939 to take measures for the defence of the civil population against possible air attack.;;;;From 1963 civil defence functions broadened to include emergency services when the Civil Defence and Emergency Organisation (CDEO) was created. The CDEO was formed in conjunction with municipalities and the Tasmanian government. The CDEO wass headed by a director appointed by the State Government. It had the responsibility of preparing plans and establishing local branches on a municipal basis and manned by volunteer men and women.
