The Unit was established in response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The Unit is chiefly responsible for administering the National Redress Scheme which was set up by the Commonwealth Government on 1 July 2018. The Scheme provides acknowledgement and support to people who experienced institutional child sexual abuse.;;;;On 20 September 2018, the Tasmanian Parliament passed the National Redress Scheme into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (Commonwealth Powers) Act 2018 to bring Tasmania into the Scheme. The Act received Royal Assent on 1 November 2018 bringing the Tasmanian Government and participating Tasmanian non-government institutions into the Scheme.
