Description:
The management and control of gaols and the safe custody, punishment, training of prisoners confined therein.NOTES: Terminology - It has not always been possible to determine which records relate to: 1. The Gaol proper - for unconvicted prisoners. 2. The House of Correction/Penitentiary - for convicted prisoners serving sentence. 3. Both the above. Where a series has related only to the Gaol proper this has been indicated but generally it has been assumed that other series related to both. In general the term 'gaol' has been used for the whole institution unless otherwise indicated. Because of the Acts governing penal institutions it is not always clear whether there always was a clearly defined distinction between the two functions. Records kept: A list specifying the types of records to be maintained at the Gaol in 1845 can be found in CSO 22/144 p. 109-111.~
