Description:
When the Female Factory at the Cascades closed in Apr 1877 part of it was used to house the "Imperial lunatics" displaced by the closure of Port Arthur. The Convict Department maintained a lunatic asylum and invalid depot at Saltwater Creek and later at Port Arthur. As part of the gradual winding down of the Cascades complex the Hospital was broken up in August 1890. Five inmates were classified as invalids and transferred to the New Town Charitable Institution. A further 17 were transferred to the Hospital at New Norfolk. The remaining 30 inmates were classified as criminally insane and a separate hospital was established for them in Hobart Gaol (though 3 and half years later they too were transferred to New Norfolk). The only surviving record of the Hospital is the Case book.~
