To provide in and outpatient services for Devonport,Kentish and Latrobe municipalities. The Mersey General Hospital was created by amalgamating the Devon Public Hospital at Latrobe and the Meercroft Hospital in Devonport. Most services were concentrated at Latrobe with Devonport becoming the maternity division, although it also operated an out-patients clinic. Maternity cases in the immediate vicinity of Latrobe continued to be admitted there until the mid 1960s. During 1995 the State Government negotiated the sale of the Mersey General to Health Care Australia P/L, a subsidiary of Mayne Nickless P/L. At midnight on 22 July the Mersey General Hospital became the Mersey Community Hospital.~
