Description:
A public hospital for Burnie was proposed in 1944. The Government subsequently acquired the darwin Private Hospital and let a tender (for 43,800 pounds) for a new wing and nurses' home in 1946. Construction was completed in 1949 and the hospital opened on 11 August. Later becoming a General Hospital, it was eventually merged with Spencer Public Hospital on 1 December 1965 to create the North-Western General Hospital.~
