Description:
When the convict depot at Campbell Town was closed the associated hospital was transferred to the colonial government. Three trustees were appointed for the hospital in the hope that it would fund itself from fees and subscriptions. despite the failure of this hope (as late as 1880 the Government was providing half the funding) it continued to operate as an independant hospital. A new building was provided in 1889. ;;;;During World War II it was taken over by the Commonwealth as a military hospital. When it reverted to the State in 1945 it was placed on an equal footing with other district hospitals by an Order-in-Council that brought it under the Hospitals Act 1918.;;;;In the late 1990's, under the newly formed Department of Health and Human Services, the hospital's was reconstituted as a multi purpose service.
