Description:
Responsible for the preventive medical services of the State, including immunisation programs, Child Health Service, School Medical Service, Mothercraft Home and Nutrition Advisory Service. A 1944 survey by the Commonwealth Nutrition Committee ranked Hobart, Launceston and Tasmania country at the bottom of a national table. A 1945 state survey confirmed these findings and a Nutrition Officer was appointed in the Public Health Department in February 1946. This evolved into the Nutrition Advisory service in the Public Health Division.
