Established as the Tasmanian School of Music in 1964 this agency was reconstituted as the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music the following year, though remaining within the Education Department. The Conservatorium was administered by the Council of Advanced Education from 1969 until the end of 1980. By arrangement with the University of Tasmania, from 1973 academic studies in music at the Conservatorium could be counted towards a degree of Bachelor of Arts. In January 1981 the Council of the University (using Faculties Statute 2i) incorporated the Conservatorium as a College of the University. (The 1981 Faculty Handbook includes a brief history of the Conservatorium). The Conservatorium administers the Australian Music Examinations Board in Tasmania on behalf of the Minister of Education.~
